Racing has a truth it never hides: performance comes from preparation.
Teams communicate early. They review data. They spot problems while they’re still small. They protect the car, the driver, and the finish before the green flag even waves.
Mental Health works the same way.
Real Talk is not a campaign. It’s a culture. It’s what happens when we stop acting like mental health is only worth discussing after life gets loud. It’s the decision to treat mental health like performance maintenance – something we build consistently, not something we scramble for under pressure.
At Race to Stop Suicide, that culture is guided by our RACE pillars.
Our RACE pillars are like tires – the contact points with the road, where vision meets reality. You can have the fastest engine and the best intentions, but without solid contact with the track, forward motion is lost. Our four pillars keep us grounded, responsive, and moving forward,
especially when the road gets rough.
Here’s how they work together.
Real Talk
Real Talk is the first tire on the road.
It’s where honesty replaces silence. It’s the willingness to say something before things feel unmanageable. It sounds like checking in without a
script. Not a perfectly worded question. Just a steady one.
“Hey – how are you really doing?”
“I’ve noticed you seem down lately.”
“I’m here. Do you need to talk?”
Real Talk removes shame from the conversation. It treats honesty as strength. It moves the conversation earlier. Suicide prevention is not only crisis response. It’s prevention in motion – connection, belonging, and support that happens long before someone reaches the edge. How we talk about suicide and mental health matters, and safe, hope-forward communication protects people who are vulnerable.
That’s why our community has four pillars – because prevention takes more than one message:
Real Talk
We speak openly, respectfully, and without judgement. We make it normal to say, “I’m struggling.” We choose language that invites help and reduces isolation.
Awareness
Awareness is how we read the track ahead.
It’s understanding the warning signs. It’s knowing where support exists and how to access it. One of the simplest, strongest tools in our country is 988 – the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It’s free, confidential, and available 24/7 by call, text, or chat. It’s for suicidal crisis, emotional distress, substance use concerns, or even when you’re worried about someone else and you need guidance.
Awareness reminds us that support is not only for crisis moments. It’s also for the days when stress piles up, motivation fades, or concern for someone else weighs heavy. Knowing where to turn keeps people from navigating blind corners alone.
Community
Community is the team that keeps us connected.
Racing never happens in isolation. Drivers rely on teams. Teams rely on communication. Community creates belonging, and belonging is protective.
Many people show up every day while quietly carrying more than others can see. Community makes room for that reality. It says: you belong here,
Engagement
Engagement is where intention turns into action.
It’s choosing to show up.
Sharing a resource. Checking on a friend. Joining our Team. Requesting a Track Banner. Just showing up for yourself. Standing visibly for suicide prevention. Engagement moves us from awareness into motion. It’s how support becomes real, felt, and seen.
Together, our RACE pillars keep us in contact with the road. They help us adjust when conditions change. They allow us to stay steady when momentum feels fragile.
Suicide prevention is not only about responding to emergencies. It’s about building traction early – through conversation, education, connection and action.
That’s why Real Talk matters.
Because silence feels strong…until it starts costing lives.
So this January, we’re asking for one intentional step:
Start one conversation.
With a teammate. A family member. A friend.
And if you’re the one who needs support right now, help is available.
If you or someone you know needs immediate support, call or text 988, or chat online at 988lifeline.org. It’s free, confidential, and available 24/7.
